USBA Installs Interim Board of Directors: Mazin Shooni Named President

The United States Billiard Association (USBA) has installed an interim Board of Directors, and Mazin Shooni has been appointed the President. Joining him on the Board are Charles Brown, William Hanisch, Ricardo Carranco, and Andrew Janquitto. The Board will serve until general elections are held in 2024.

Shooni, the 2006 USBA National Three-Cushion Champion and a long-time promoter of the carom game in America, had served as President of the USBA from 2017 to 2019. Both Brown and Janquitto are also ex-Presidents of the USBA. Brown has been the tournament director for many of the USBA nationals and numerous other tournaments across the USA. Janquitto will serve as the Secretary-Treasurer for the interim board.

Will Hanisch, from New York, and Ricardo Carranco, from Los Angeles, round out the leadership group with their individual qualifications and experience. Hanisch is a computer programmer and avid player of both the pocket and pocketless versions of the game. Carranco, who also served on the Board in the past, arranges and runs tournaments on the west coast. He is also a fine practitioner of the carom game.

Shooni and the Board are fast at work, planning to introduce a new website in the coming weeks. They are also working on the 2023 calendar, which is highlighted by the Las Vegas World Cup, scheduled to begin on February 26, 2023.

The USBA calls for elections of the Board every four years. Unfortunately, the last scheduled election was derailed by the Covid-19 pandemic. Now that the pandemic has calmed down and the billiard rooms are open again, the Board feels it appropriate to hold general elections beginning with a nomination period in late 2023. Until then, the interim Board will guide the USBA.

Dedicated to Promoting the Sport A room owner that has only one or two 3-cushion tables can now have 3-cushion competition and give their customers a chance to learn the game. The quickest way to get new players to play the game of 3-Cushion is to reach out to pool players. Paul Frankel (Professor-Q-Ball) came up with the idea of this shot contest several years ago. Our goal is to have pool players participate in these shot contests from hundreds of rooms across the country, creating more 3-cushion players. We have provided all the material you need if you wish to hold a shot contest in one of your local rooms that has a 3-cushion table. All the shots that are diagrammed have been examined and approved by 3-time United States 3-Cushion Champion, Pedro Piedrabuena. We have been very careful to design all the shots so that the placement of all 3 balls is easy. The shots are not so difficult either because we want the beginners to score as often as possible, so that they don't get frustrated right from the beginning. The shot contest has 8 shots and how to make them. There are an additional 8 shots included in the "Follow-Up Material" for the players to practice after the contest is over. For best results, use a color printer when printing the files, especially the "8 Shot Contest Shots" and the "Follow-Up Material". The Word files are best. The "Sample Flyer" is shown to give you an idea of what it should look like. If you are holding a shot contest with Paul Frankel, he will create a flyer for you.
